Remember

Never select a filing status from one fact alone.

For most calendar-year taxpayers, the taxpayer’s marital status is generally determined on the last day of the tax year — December 31.

Then examine the complete fact pattern.

For Head of Household, consider:

Unmarried/Considered Unmarried → More Than Half of Household Cost → Qualifying Person → Other Requirements

A child alone does not automatically create Head of Household status.

For married taxpayers, determine whether MFJ, MFS or another applicable status applies.

When a spouse dies, investigate the year-of-death and surviving-spouse rules rather than automatically selecting Single.
